Measure before you calculate
- Check the level on level ground using the vehicle maker’s warm/cold and settling-time procedure. Record the odometer and the starting level.
- Add a measured amount of the exact grade and specification the manual requires. Do not overfill; use the dipstick or electronic-level procedure.
- Drive a meaningful distance, then repeat the same level-check procedure under comparable conditions. Record every top-up rather than estimating from the bottle.
- If the manual publishes an oil-consumption limit, copy the exact value, unit, engine scope, test conditions, source, and revision before comparing it.
Do not wait for a rate calculation when warning signs are present
Stop safely and switch the engine off if the oil-pressure warning appears, the level is below the safe range or absent from the dipstick, oil is leaking actively, smoke or a burning smell is strong, or the engine develops new knocking/ticking noise. Restore a safe level only as the manual directs and arrange qualified service or towing when the cause is uncertain.

Does adding oil prove the engine burned it?
No. A top-up can reflect external leaks, an inconsistent level reading, service fill differences, or internal consumption. The calculator only normalizes the amount and distance you enter.
Should I switch to thicker oil to reduce consumption?
Do not change viscosity unless the owner’s manual explicitly allows that grade. A thicker oil can hide symptoms without fixing the cause and may not meet the engine’s cold-flow or specification requirements.
