Oil bottles mix marketing words, viscosity grades, API marks, ILSAC categories, and OEM approvals. Use this page to read the label, then compare it against your owner's manual.
Bottom line
Match the manual's exact grade and exact specification.
The front viscosity badge is only one field. Turn the bottle around, find the API Donut and approval wording, and check whether the bottle explicitly lists the same requirement as your manual.

Where each requirement appears on an oil bottle
- Viscosity grade
The large front grade is a quick flow-classification check, not proof of performance.
- API / ILSAC / ACEA
Look on the back for the service category or sequence named by your manual.
- Manufacturer approval
Confirm the exact carmaker approval wording; a similar family name is not an exact match.
- Owner’s manual
Compare every bottle field with the exact engine, model year, market and manual notes.
Do not infer these from the label
- A front 5W-30 or 0W-20 badge does not prove the oil carries the API, ILSAC, ACEA, dexos, or OEM approval your manual requires.
- API Starburst or Shield is not a universal upgrade. It points to an ILSAC branch, and that branch still needs to match the manual.
- A related newer-looking label is not automatically an exact approval. Treat it as unknown unless the manual or manufacturer says it supersedes the old wording.
What each label mark means
Viscosity grade
0W-20, 5W-30
Flow behavior when cold and hot. It is not a quality rating and it is not the same as an approval.
Match the exact grade your manual lists, including any allowed alternatives.
API Donut
API SQ / SAE 0W-20 / Resource Conserving
Back-label service mark that shows the API category, viscosity, and related label claims.
Use it to confirm the API category and grade, then check OEM approvals separately.
API Starburst
Certified for Gasoline Engines
Front-label mark for eligible ILSAC passenger-car oils such as GF-7A.
Helpful for ILSAC A-branch requirements, but not a substitute for carmaker approvals.
API Shield
0W-16 / GF-7B branch
Mark for eligible low-viscosity ILSAC oils such as GF-7B.
Use only when the manual calls for the matching low-viscosity branch.
OEM approval
dexos1 Gen3, VW 504.00, BMW LL-04
A carmaker-specific performance approval. This is often warranty-relevant.
Match the exact wording. A related API/ILSAC mark is not automatically enough.
Capacity and interval
Usually in the manual, not on the bottle
How much oil the engine takes and how often to change it.
Confirm capacity with filter and severe-service interval in the owner manual.
A safe bottle-check order
- Manual wording Write down the required viscosity and specification as separate fields.
- Front label Use it for a quick grade check, not for final compatibility.
- Back label Read the API Donut, ILSAC branch, and OEM approval claims.
- Exact match or unknown If an approval is missing or only related, treat the result as unknown.
Common outcomes
Exact match
Manual: 0W-20, API SQ / ILSAC GF-7A or listed equivalent.
Bottle: 0W-20, API SQ, ILSAC GF-7A, Starburst.
Likely match on the fields shown, unless the manual also requires an OEM approval.
Right grade, missing approval
Manual: 5W-30 and dexos1 Gen3.
Bottle: 5W-30, API SQ, no dexos wording.
Do not treat as a full match. The viscosity is right, but the required OEM approval is missing.
Related but not exact
Manual: ILSAC GF-6B 0W-16.
Bottle: ILSAC GF-7B 0W-16 with API Shield.
Potentially relevant newer branch, but confirm the manual or manufacturer wording before buying.
Wrong branch
Manual: 0W-20 / ILSAC A branch.
Bottle: 0W-16 / ILSAC GF-7B / API Shield.
Do not use the Shield as a generic upgrade. The grade and branch are different.
