What is GM dexos1 Gen3?
Specification · GM (General Motors)
dexos1 Gen3 is an active GM-licensed gasoline-engine oil specification with requirements beyond its API/ILSAC baseline. Verify the exact product, viscosity, and 11-character license number in GM's official list; GM also lists licensed dexosR oils as backward-compatible for vehicles that used dexos1 Gen3, but the appropriate viscosity grade and manual requirement still have to match.

Manual-first check
A match needs all three
- Viscosity grade The cold-start and operating-temperature grade listed in the manual.
- Oil specification The required API, ILSAC, ACEA or manufacturer performance claim.
- Exact vehicle context Engine, model year and market, including manual footnotes and exceptions.
Check a bottle label
If your manual lists dexos1 Gen3, use the oil spec checker to compare the manual requirement with what an oil bottle says. Verify issuer-controlled evidence with the approval and license guide. Need the source first? Start with the owner's manual finder. Viscosity and approvals are separate requirements.
Specification, not a grade
This is the clearest example of why viscosity is not the same as specification. Your GM engine may call for 0W-20, dexos1 Gen3 — that’s a grade (0W-20) and a specification (dexos1 Gen3). Both must match.
What dexos1 Gen3 adds
Building on the API SP and ILSAC GF-6A industry baselines, dexos1 Gen3 adds GM’s own tests — including stronger protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) in turbocharged direct-injection engines, and tighter limits on deposits and oxidation. It is GM-licensed: qualifying oils carry the dexos mark.
How to comply
- Record the exact viscosity and dexos requirement from the manual.
- Look for the dexos icon on the front label and the 11-character alphanumeric license number on the back.
- Open GM’s official dexos1 Gen3 licensed-products list.
- Match the product or brand, supplier, specification, viscosity, and license number. A similar product name or a marketer’s “meets” statement is not the same record.
- If considering dexosR, use GM’s official dexosR licensed-products list and confirm the appropriate viscosity grade.
If the bottle and official record do not agree, choose a product you can verify or ask GM/dealer support. Oil Manual does not certify products and does not mirror GM’s changing licensed-product list.
Frequently asked questions
Is dexos1 Gen3 just a viscosity grade?
No. It is a performance specification, separate from the viscosity grade. An oil must be a specific grade (e.g. 0W-20) AND carry the dexos1 Gen3 license to satisfy a GM engine that requires it.
Can I use a non-dexos oil that says "meets dexos"?
Look for the official dexos license mark, not just marketing wording. GM licenses specific products; "meets the requirements of" is not the same as being licensed. When in doubt, follow your owner's manual.
Can dexosR replace dexos1 Gen3?
GM's current dexosR page says licensed dexosR oils are backward-compatible for gasoline engines that used dexos1 Gen3, provided the viscosity grade is appropriate. Confirm the exact manual requirement and official license listing rather than assuming from the front label.
