What a Ford WSS code tells you

Ford uses engineering specification codes to define performance requirements for fluids and other materials. Engine oil codes commonly begin with WSS-M2C, followed by a number and one or more suffix letters. The full string matters. It is the specification; WSS, M2C, or a partial number is not enough to select oil.

The code is separate from viscosity. A manual may require a viscosity such as 0W-20 or 5W-30 and a specific Ford WSS code. The bottle needs to satisfy both requirements. Matching only the large viscosity badge on the front label leaves the performance requirement unverified.

Why Ford has more than one oil specification

Ford engines differ in bearing clearances, turbocharging, emissions equipment, fuel economy targets, timing systems, and market calibration. One universal Ford oil specification would not describe all of those applications. Codes can also evolve as test methods or engine families change.

That is why a code used for one EcoBoost, diesel, hybrid, or older naturally aspirated engine should not be copied to another vehicle from memory. Model year, engine, and market all belong in the lookup.
